EXPORTING LNG
The continued development of shale gas has created significant changes in the U.S. natural gas market. Shale gas not only helps meet U.S. natural gas demand, but could help meet demand worldwide --- creating potential LNG export opportunities.
Although the Energy Information Administration (EIA) predicts that shale gas will replace much of the reduced imports from Canada, LNG still plays a significant role in diversifying America's natural gas supplies, and in supply constrained regions such as the northeast and elsewhere when peak seasonal periods drive up demand.
However, the flow of natural gas in and out of our country should be guided by free market principles. America needs the flexibility to move natural gas from where it is produced to where it is consumed. The ability to export natural gas would keep the U.S. from having a competitive disadvantage in this international market.
The ability to import and export LNG will improve access and connectivity to global gas markets, thereby allowing both domestic and international gas supplies to respond to worldwide demand.
